I was the lead plaintiff in Soderberg v. Carrion, a court transparency case that successfully challenged and overturned a Maryland ban on re-broadcasting criminal proceedings in state court. Represented by Georgetown Law’s Institute For Constitutional Advocacy and Protection and Maryland Volunteer Lawyers For The Arts, this first amendment-based lawsuit was filed in 2019 and moved through the Federal District Court for the District of Maryland as well as the Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit over the next few years.

In December 2022, Judge Richard Bennett granted, in full, plaintiffs' motion for summary judgment on first amendment grounds. This ruling allows all Marylanders to re-broadcast, in any capacity, be it podcast, documentary, or social media, the lawfully obtained recordings of criminal proceedings that occurred in state court without fear of being held in contempt. The coalition of plaintiffs also included reporter Baynard Woods, Baltimore Action Legal Team, Open Justice Baltimore, and Qiana Johnson of Courtwatch Prince George’s County.

In September 2023, the Maryland Supreme Court approved the rules that would end of the broadcast ban. It goes into effect on January 1, 2024.

Currently I am one of two plaintiffs in lawsuit filed by Baltimore Action Legal Team against the Baltimore City Law Department for acting in conspiracy with the Baltimore Police Department to maintain a pattern and practice of obstructing access to public records of police misconduct.
